Comprehensive Flood Preparedness Measures for Monsoon Season

CM Rekha Gupta stated clearly that her government has meticulously worked to bolster Delhi’s flood management capabilities ahead of the upcoming monsoon season. Key departments including Public Works Department (PWD), Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), and Delhi Jal Board (DJB) have participated actively, ensuring that infrastructure and response mechanisms are in optimal condition.

The administration undertook extensive repair and maintenance work on all barrages and critical drains, ensuring these structures can handle heavy rainfall effectively. Approximately 20 lakh metric tons of silt have already been removed from waterways, dramatically improving drainage capacity. Additionally, desilting of drains managed by both the MCD and PWD is nearly 80–90% complete, significantly reducing risks of flooding due to clogged channels.

Chief Minister Gupta assured citizens that these improvements would substantially decrease the likelihood of floods similar to those seen in 2023. The administration’s approach clearly emphasizes preventive maintenance and preparedness, indicating a strategic shift toward sustainable urban flood management.

Robust Inter-Departmental Coordination and Operational Control Centre

Highlighting another key advancement, Chief Minister Gupta praised the improved coordination among various administrative departments, a crucial factor previously lacking during flood emergencies. She confirmed that a detailed operational meeting was attended by all relevant departments, who presented comprehensive preparedness reports. Such proactive inter-departmental collaboration will ensure rapid response to any flood situations arising during the monsoon season.

Additionally, Gupta announced that Delhi’s dedicated Flood Control Centre is now fully operational. Equipped with advanced monitoring technology, the centre is prepared to coordinate real-time responses, manage emergency situations efficiently, and reduce any potential impact on the city’s infrastructure and residents.

She revealed alarming information, stating that the Flood Control Committee had not convened even once under previous governments, leaving Delhi vulnerable to disasters like the catastrophic floods of 2023. These floods overwhelmed the city’s infrastructure so severely that the barrage gates, essential for managing floodwaters, became inoperable, exacerbating the crisis.

In contrast, Gupta emphasized her government’s proactive stance and serious commitment to preventing future catastrophes. The extensive preparation now undertaken underscores a new administrative direction, explicitly contrasting past negligence with current accountability and preparedness.
