Addressing the media, M.Y. Tarigami condemned the violence in Poonch, drawing parallels to cross-border conflicts that have historically disrupted peace in the region. He reiterated that “war, escalation, and terrorism are not solutions” and argued that military approaches cannot resolve the underlying socio-political issues of Jammu & Kashmir.
Tarigami emphasized the recent Jammu & Kashmir elections as a turning point, calling the public participation a “clear expression of trust in democracy.” He urged the government to not only respect the electoral outcome but also take it as a signal that the people seek governance through dialogue, accountability, and peaceful engagement.
Highlighting the plight of civilians in border districts like Poonch, Rajouri, and Uri, Tarigami expressed concern over the repeated cross-border shelling and terror-linked incidents that continue to claim innocent lives. He demanded immediate relief, rehabilitation, and compensation for affected families, criticizing the “lack of adequate government support” and calling for urgent administrative action to secure the dignity and livelihoods of border residents.
Tarigami has long advocated for a people-centric approach to conflict resolution in Jammu & Kashmir. He believes that restoring trust, engaging in dialogue, and addressing developmental grievances are essential to defeating the narrative of violence that extremists and external forces often exploit.
He further appealed to both the Union government and regional leadership to prioritize inclusive governance, invest in infrastructure and education in border areas, and build institutional mechanisms that promote peace and social justice.
In conclusion, Tarigami’s message is consistent and urgent: peace in Jammu & Kashmir is only possible through democracy, not through the barrel of a gun. The focus must now shift from confrontation to conversation, from fear to freedom, and from silence to participation.
