Fifth-Generation Stealth Jet Lands at Thiruvananthapuram Airport After Fuel Emergency, Awaits Recovery Team

Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala – In an unusual and high-profile incident, a UK Navy F-35 stealth fighter jet made an emergency landing at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport a few days ago due to low fuel, defence officials confirmed. The aircraft remains grounded at the airport after developing a hydraulic failure during its attempted return flight.

According to sources, the F-35 was en route during a routine operation when it encountered fuel shortage and was forced to land in Kerala. The Indian Air Force (IAF) responded swiftly, providing refuelling and logistical assistance to support the UK Navy aircraft and its personnel.

However, while preparing for take-off, the fighter jet developed a critical hydraulic system malfunction, rendering it inoperable. A UK Navy technical team was dispatched soon after to assess and repair the issue, but despite their efforts, the jet could not be restored to operational condition.

UK Sends Larger Maintenance Team as Indian Support Continues

Defence officials have now confirmed that a larger maintenance and recovery crew from the United Kingdom is expected to arrive in India to take further action. If repairs cannot be completed onsite, the F-35 may be airlifted back using a UK military transport aircraft—a complex but viable option for recovering the multi-million-dollar fighter jet.

The aircraft continues to remain stationed at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, protected by tight security arrangements. Visuals from the site show the jet parked away from public view as authorities coordinate repair or extraction logistics.

The event underscores the growing defence cooperation between India and the UK, particularly in terms of emergency response, logistics, and technical assistance. It also highlights India’s readiness and capability to support foreign defence assets in times of need.

This is also a rare occasion where a fifth-generation fighter like the F-35 has made an unscheduled landing on Indian soil, sparking interest among defence observers and aviation enthusiasts.

While the UK Navy awaits resolution, Indian authorities continue to provide full assistance, with coordination between airport officials, defence personnel, and security agencies to ensure safety and secrecy surrounding the high-tech jet.
