Tharoor’s Global Message on Terrorism from Panama

In the wake of the recent Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor delivered a powerful and uncompromising statement during his official visit to Panama, where he is leading an all-party Indian parliamentary delegation. Speaking at a diplomatic event, Tharoor invoked Mahatma Gandhi to underscore India’s new, assertive stance against cross-border terrorism, clearly signalling that India will not remain silent or passive in the face of increasing threats.

In a statement that has drawn national and international attention, Tharoor said, “Even the land of Mahatma Gandhi will not turn the other cheek when this happens — we will respond.” This remark encapsulates India’s evolving doctrine: Gandhian principles of peace do not equate to inaction in the face of aggression. His speech resonated deeply given the recent martyrdom of Indian soldiers and increased public pressure for accountability, especially towards state-sponsored terrorism.

Tharoor’s Panama Address: A Call for International Accountability and Pakistan’s Exposure

Tharoor’s speech was not just a tribute to Gandhi’s legacy, but a direct condemnation of Pakistan’s duplicity. He sharply criticized the Pakistani military and police officials who were seen attending funerals of UN-designated terrorists, accusing the Pakistani state of overt support and glorification of terrorism. This, he said, renders hollow any claims of innocence by Islamabad on the global stage.

He connected the issue to India’s internal stability and economic aspirations, stating that terrorism is being used as a tool to destabilize India’s growing economy, especially in Kashmir, which has recently experienced a historic surge in domestic tourism. According to Tharoor, these attacks are attempts to derail peace and economic momentum in the region.

He urged the global community to hold not just the terrorists accountable, but also those nations that offer them safe haven, financing, and state-level support. During meetings with Panama’s President and Foreign Minister, India received clear diplomatic support in its stand against state-sponsored terror, furthering India’s message on an international platform. Tharoor also spoke about enhancing India-Panama cooperation in tech, education, and pharmaceuticals, broadening the scope of the diplomatic mission beyond security concerns.
