Modi’s Visit Revives Indo-Cyprus Relations After 20 Years

In a rare and symbolic gesture, the President of Cyprus personally welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Larnaca International Airport, marking the start of Modi’s historic visit to the island nation. This is PM Modi’s first-ever visit to Cyprus, and the first by an Indian Prime Minister in over two decades.

The visit comes at a diplomatically significant time, as India’s relations with Turkey remain tense, particularly due to Ankara’s repeated interference in India’s internal matters, including Kashmir. Cyprus, which has its own long-standing conflict with Turkey, has emerged as a natural partner for India in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

PM Modi’s arrival in Cyprus and the exceptional reception he received reflects a deepening Indo-Cypriot strategic partnership, particularly in the context of shifting geopolitical alignments. The two nations are expected to discuss bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, defense, energy, and digital technology, while also reinforcing support for international law and sovereign integrity.

India finds a natural Mediterranean ally as Turkey backs Pakistan

India’s expanding global footprint finds a key ally in Cyprus, a European Union member that has long sought international recognition and solidarity in its own disputes with Turkey. By visiting Cyprus during his multi-nation tour, PM Modi is not only rejuvenating bilateral ties, but also sending a subtle diplomatic message to Ankara: India supports nations that respect sovereignty and international law. This gesture comes against the backdrop of Turkey’s pro-Pakistan stance at various global forums and its continued criticism of India’s position in Kashmir. In contrast, Cyprus has consistently supported India at the United Nations and other multilateral platforms.

The personal welcome extended by the Cypriot President is highly symbolic and breaks with standard diplomatic protocol. It reflects Cyprus’s desire to elevate ties with India beyond routine bilateral engagement. Indian officials noted that the reception showcased “mutual trust and warmth” between the two democracies. The agenda for the visit includes signing of key agreements on economic cooperation, fintech innovation, defense collaboration, and maritime security. People-to-people exchanges, cultural diplomacy, and high-level ministerial meetings are also planned.

PM Modi’s visit positions India as a balancing power in the Mediterranean, while opening up new economic opportunities through EU-aligned economies like Cyprus. As India charts a more assertive and independent foreign policy, building partnerships with nations like Cyprus plays a vital role in diversifying alliances beyond traditional power blocs.
