Canadian Leaders Back India Reset, Urge Action on Extremism Ahead of G7

As diplomatic winds shift between India and Canada, strong endorsements are emerging from Canadian political voices in support of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s invitation to PM Narendra Modi for the G7 Summit in Alberta (June 15–17). One of the most vocal supporters is Dallas Brodie, Vancouver-Quilchena MLA and lawyer, who welcomed the invitation as a “fantastic development” and a long-overdue reset in bilateral ties.

Speaking candidly, Brodie acknowledged the strained Trudeau-era relationship, which had reached a nadir after Canada’s unproven allegations about India’s involvement in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023. Carney’s gesture, she said, signals a willingness to move past the diplomatic freeze and realign Canada’s policy with strategic and economic realism.

As Canada hosts the world’s largest Indian diaspora, this moment represents more than a photo-op—it’s a chance to confront extremism, rebuild trust, and lay the foundation for critical Indo-Pacific collaboration.

Brodie Calls Khalistan Threat ‘Scary’, Urges Ottawa to Act Before G7

Brodie did not mince words in describing Khalistani extremism as a “significant problem—dangerous and scary.” She stressed that the majority of both Hindus and Sikhs in Canada are tired of the toxic narrative being pushed by fringe separatist groups. “It’s time for Canada to take strong action,” she said, calling for the issue to be top priority during the G7 summit.

She also advocated for a memorial to victims of the 1985 Air India Kanishka bombing, calling it a moral reminder of the costs of ignoring extremist threats. The bombing remains the worst terror attack in Canadian history, and Brodie’s call for a permanent tribute serves as both symbolic justice and policy direction.

Brodie also expressed solidarity with India on the recent Pahalgam terror attack, calling it “sickening” and a wake-up call for Western democracies to take a clear, unambiguous stance against terrorism, regardless of political convenience.

Carney’s Modi Invite Signals Shift from Past Grudges to Strategic Logic

PM Mark Carney’s personal phone call to Modi, extending the G7 invitation, reflects a pragmatic pivot. Recognizing India as the fifth-largest economy, Carney acknowledged that “India must be at the table.” The invitation comes despite a rocky 2023–24, which saw diplomatic expulsions, paused trade talks, and Canadian arrests of Indian-origin men.

Carney’s message is clear: it’s time for Canada to prioritize economic logic, energy cooperation, and Indo-Pacific security strategy over political theatrics. Analysts say this move positions Canada to reclaim lost ground in its India relationship, with opportunities in critical minerals, clean energy, education, and tech innovation.

Brodie further emphasized that mainstream Sikh Canadians reject Khalistan ideology, a reality that is finally gaining political recognition in Ottawa. If Canada follows through with concrete actions against extremist networks, Modi’s G7 visit could become a defining moment in India-Canada relations—moving from symbolism to strategic recalibration.
