Congress Questions PM’s Priorities—Foreign Tours or Homefront Responsibility?
Is Prime Minister Narendra Modi focusing too much on foreign trips while national crises simmer at home? This was the bold question raised by Congress MP Jairam Ramesh, who took a direct jibe at the PM by calling him a “Super Premium Frequent Flier” just ahead of his five-nation diplomatic visit. According to Ramesh, while the country grapples with internal challenges—like the unrest in Manipur and the fallout of Operation Sindoor—Modi is busy with what he called a “global jaunt.” His remarks not only target Modi’s foreign policy timing but also bring back focus on long-standing domestic issues that, according to critics, remain unresolved.
With India Facing Crises, PM’s Global Outreach Becomes Congress’s Political Ammunition
Jairam Ramesh’s statement came hours before PM Modi’s scheduled departure for a five-nation tour including Ghana, Argentina, Trinidad & Tobago, Namibia, and Brazil (for the BRICS summit). The Congress leader said this trip proves how Modi prioritizes international optics over national duties.
He highlighted several urgent issues:
- Manipur Violence: The PM has not visited the conflict-hit state even as ethnic clashes continue to affect lives. Ramesh labeled this a clear case of “running from responsibility.”
- Operation Sindoor Fallout: Media reports hinted at initial setbacks during India’s counter-terror operation in Pakistan due to alleged miscalculations. Ramesh questioned Modi’s direct involvement in strategic calls.
- Unanswered Trump Claims: Former U.S. President Donald Trump recently claimed credit for a ceasefire between India and Pakistan through trade pressure. Ramesh noted Modi hasn’t rebutted the claim, calling it a “diplomatic embarrassment.”
- Pahalgam Terror Attack: Ramesh criticized the delay in nabbing the culprits of the April 2025 Pahalgam massacre, citing a pattern of unresolved attacks going back to Poonch, Gulmarg, and Gagangir.
Despite BJP pushback, stating that remarks about Sindoor were “out of context,” the Congress is making Modi’s foreign trips a political weapon, painting him as more concerned with his global image than national accountability.
