Crowd Noise and Firecrackers Spook Elephant; No Injuries Reported, Yatra Continues
In an unexpected incident during the revered Rath Yatra in Ahmedabad, an elephant named Subhadra, part of the temple procession, ran amok near the Khadia area. The sacred event, known for its grand procession of deities pulled by elephants and chariots, briefly turned chaotic when Subhadra became agitated by crowd noise and nearby firecrackers.
Eyewitnesses reported that the elephant, seemingly spooked, broke free from its mahout and began charging through the street, causing panic among onlookers. Quick response by the local wildlife team and police helped prevent injuries. Authorities used a tranquiliser dart to safely subdue and isolate the elephant in a protected area. According to officials, no injuries or damage to property were reported, thanks to swift crowd control and traffic diversion in the Khadia zone.
Despite the disruption, the remaining 17 elephants continued the Yatra without delay, maintaining the rhythm and sanctity of the centuries-old ritual. Local administration deployed additional personnel to manage the crowd and ensure the safety of all participants. Officials confirmed that the remaining animals were calm and under professional supervision.
Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner appreciated the rapid action and reassured the public that all the elephants are trained and cared for under strict guidelines. The temple trust overseeing the Rath Yatra also clarified that such incidents are rare and that Subhadra would receive medical attention before rejoining the temple routine.
The Jagannath Rath Yatra in Ahmedabad is the second largest in India after Puri and draws lakhs of devotees. Each year, 18 richly decorated elephants accompany the chariots of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra. The temporary scare has sparked discussions around animal participation in religious events, though officials maintain that the elephants are well-trained and are accompanied by veterinary staff throughout. While Subhadra’s momentary panic brought a tense moment, the successful containment ensured the Yatra proceeded with devotion and discipline. Devotees expressed relief and continued the spiritual celebration with renewed enthusiasm.
