Indian Government’s Humanitarian Effort Lauded as Symbol of Strong Bilateral Ties

In a gesture that underscores India’s growing role as a regional humanitarian power, the Government of Sri Lanka has officially extended its sincere gratitude to India for assisting in the evacuation of Sri Lankan nationals from Iran amid the rapidly escalating Israel–Iran conflict. The acknowledgment comes from Sri Lanka’s Foreign Ministry, which issued a formal statement praising New Delhi’s timely and compassionate response during a critical hour.

The evacuation was conducted as part of India’s wider operation to extract its own citizens from Iran following a series of Israeli airstrikes that targeted Iranian nuclear and military facilities. As tensions soared, and with fears of a broader regional war, India initiated rapid evacuation protocols—not just for its own nationals, but also for friendly nations caught in the crisis zone. Among them were Sri Lankan citizens, who were safely brought out alongside Indian evacuees.

India’s Iran Evacuation Shows Regional Leadership and Sri Lanka–India Partnership

Sri Lanka’s Foreign Ministry called the action a “timely act of solidarity,” emphasizing that it was deeply appreciated by the people and government of Sri Lanka. The ministry noted that this gesture reflects the “strong and enduring partnership” between the two South Asian neighbors and reaffirms India’s role as a dependable and compassionate regional power.

The evacuation is not just a logistical success—it is a powerful diplomatic signal. India, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, has consistently positioned itself as a first responder in regional crises, whether through vaccine diplomacy during the COVID-19 pandemic or the safe evacuation of Indian and foreign nationals from war zones like Ukraine, Sudan, and now Iran.

For Sri Lanka, which continues to rebuild after years of economic and political turmoil, India’s support in such high-stakes situations strengthens bilateral ties and showcases India’s commitment to South Asian unity and humanitarian responsibility.

In a region where geopolitical loyalties are often tested, India’s gesture to include Sri Lankan citizens in a sensitive, high-risk evacuation affirms its stature as not just a strategic player, but also a neighbor that acts with empathy and resolve.

This act of solidarity may well serve as a blueprint for future regional cooperation during times of crisis—where India leads not just with power, but with purpose.
