On Monday, April 28, 2025, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and his Liberal Party won the federal elections, marking a surprising comeback. The win came largely due to rising concerns among Canadians over U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to take over parts of Canada and start a trade war.
During his victory speech in Ottawa, Carney emphasized the need for Canadians to stay united in the face of pressure from the U.S. He also repeated something he had often said during the campaign — that the long-standing, cooperative relationship between Canada and the U.S. that began after World War II is now over. “We’ve moved past the shock of America’s betrayal, but we must always remember what it taught us,” he said.
U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war and his renewed threat to annex Canada—shared in a social media post on election day—angered many Canadians. This was the main reason how Trump’s trade war actually helped Mark Carney to win the canada elections . It turned relations with the U.S. into one of the biggest issues of the election. Mark Carney, 60, had never held an elected position before and only recently took over as Prime Minister from Justin Trudeau, but he centered his campaign around standing up to Trump.
Mark Carney, who had earlier served as the head of the central banks in both the UK and Canada, convinced voters that his international financial background made him the right person to lead the country through economic challenges. He also pledged to strengthen trade ties with other countries, aiming to reduce Canada’s dependence on the U.S.
Trudeau stepping down also played a major role in the Liberals’ comeback—one of the most surprising political turnarounds in Canada’s history.
